About Us

We are a purpose-led lifestyle brand that connects people through modern design.

For us, it is important to know the origin of the products we buy, as well as the impact of our consumption—not only on the environment, but also on the communities and individuals that create them.

Our Mission

We believe in slow design. We’ve connected with artisan groups from around the globe to preserve and honor traditional artistry, and we love the idea of limited edition, small-batch homewares that can be admired for a very long time.

For that reason, everything we curate is handcrafted and produced in partnership with our network of weavers in the North of Ghana. These world-class artisans, mostly women, apply traditional weaving skills, passed down from generation to generation over centuries.

  • 1. Veta Vera

The process unfolds in a series of carefully orchestrated steps. It all starts with the humble Veta Vera, also known as elephant grass, which is exclusively harvested in Ghana. This robust grass, towering over three meters in height, is sustainably gathered multiple times during the rainy season, leaving it undisturbed for future growth.

  • 2. Time to Harvest

Once harvested, the grass is meticulously dried for weeks before selection. Basket weavers delicately split the strands using their teeth and roll the straw to create a twisted texture. After this, dyeing commences, where a delicate dance of proportions and soaking times results in a rich spectrum of colors.

  • 3. Endless Coloured Rows

Now prepared, weaving begins from the base, with each row incorporating various colors and patterns, showcasing the weaver's creativity. As the top edge is meticulously finished and handles are added, the basket's structural integrity solidifies. Ultimately, the finished Anansi basket stands as a testament to the artistry and dedication of its maker, ready to embark on its journey to homes around the world.

Q. How can I reshape my basket?

A. Some baskets may require shaping once you receive them. To reshape basket, submerge in water to wet the basket (do not get the leather handles wet), reshape basket and let dry.

Q. How can I keep my basket clean?

A. Please wipe the basket with a damp cloth to avoid the colours from bleeding.

Q. My basket is not exactly like the picture. Why is that?

A. All of our products are handmade, and as such, no two products are exactly the same. There can be minor changes in size and colour, and that is part of the beauty of Anansi's handmade products. Each of them is unique and special in its own way.

Having said that, rest assured that we take exquisite care to ensure that each basket falls within the specified size parameters.

Our handmade products are held in the highest regard and we hope that you appreciate these variations as much as we do.

Q. What are the baskets made of?

A. Our baskets are made of elephant grass, so-called because it grows so tall and strong in the region where these baskets are made. In fact, it was so abundant in the region of Bolgatanga, that for many years it was considered a nuisance, and basket weaving evolved to make use of an overly abundant resource.

Q. How are the weavers paid?

A. All our weavers are paid a fair market wage for each basket. In addition, we are working to support other initiatives to help local communities, such as education or sanitation programs.
